It won’t surprise you to hear that distance learning is at an all-time high. To be more specific, 65% of households with children are reportedly engaging in online learning.

That means there’s a wealth of people out there, just like you, who are looking to find the most efficient way to complete their online homework assignments.

Learning how to focus on schoolwork isn’t rocket science. However, it is something that requires a strong will and a dose of determination.

We’re about to suggest some pretty unnatural things (like prying your cell phone out of your hand). So, it will take a little bit of resolve.

But, once you make the decision to put your education first, the rest will fall into place. Get ready to create a study space, slip into some lush loungewear, sip a lovely cup of tea, and perfect your writing skills in no time at all.

1. Turn Off Notifications

This is the king of focusing tips. If you plan on listening to any of these online schoolwork tips, this is the one.

There are several ways to do this, so you can pick your poison. But, the end result is the same; you must turn off all the notifications on your phone and computer.

This includes phone calls, texts, Facebook alerts, Facebook messages, email, all of it. Put each device on do not disturb and don’t allow yourself to log on anywhere until break time.

There’s also an “old school” way of doing this. Simply put your phone in another room; that will help you get down to the business of acing your next test.

2. Schedule Small Breaks

If you opt to keep your phone nearby, then there’s one thing you can use it for. Set an alarm every 20-30 minutes and take a five to ten-minute break.

Time the work intervals and your breaks. During these breaks, you can reward yourself for being good about the distraction-free zone. But, don’t stay on Facebook after the five to ten-minute break is over.

3. Create a Dedicated Space

Sure, we’ve all studied in our beds or tapped away on our laptops in a coffee shop. But, by and large, we should all have a dedicated space, a study studio.

Keep everything you need at hand, like pens, paper, and highlighters. But, keep it all organized. Studies continue to prove that a clean space enhances productivity and reduces stress.

So, whether you realize it or not, an uncluttered space is far more conducive to study time than a disaster zone where you need to weed through layers of junk just to find one pen.

Keep it well-lit. Have an organized file system on your desk. Set out an essential oil diffuser and use oils like lavender and lemongrass for stress relief. Light a candle. And keep a small electric kettle nearby for energizing cups of tea.

4. Stay Fueled

Use that electric tea kettle to stay hydrated and fueled. Select refreshing blends like green tea (which has small amounts of caffeine) or peppermint (which has no caffeine). Matcha tea has plenty of caffeine if you’re in the mood for more of a boost.

Keep a jug of water nearby, along with healthy snacks like fruit, nuts, and granola bars. Whatever you do, don’t reach for the phone during the study interval. Rather, reach for some hydration or a handful of walnuts.

5. Get Comfortable

The space matters and so does your wardrobe. Take a moment to change out of your “street clothes” and into something more comfortable.

Swap those skinny jeans for a pair of leggings. Put on soft, comfy socks. Change into a fresh t-shirt and plush sweater.

If this applies, tie your hair back in a bun so you don’t fiddle with it. This is all part of creating a calm space for a dedicated task.

6. Play Instrumental Music

Like your alarm, another app that could be conducive is Spotify, Apple Music, or your streaming service of choice. Playing soft instrumental music in the background contributes to the calming environment you’re creating.

It will create a peaceful space and studies continue to assert that classical music helps the brain. Find the station or YouTube channel that works for you and keep it quietly streaming in the background.

7. Put Pen to Paper

Even though we’re dealing with online studying and most of this will be handled on a screen, you still want to work with pen and paper.

The act of writing helps you retain more information. Draft colorful outlines as you work through a chapter in your text. Create colorful index cards as you memorize important concepts.

Shifting from passive reading to active writing is one of the best methods of retention you can employ, no matter the format in which you’re learning.

None of these tips should knock your socks off. But, the impact they’ll have on your online homework will. We insist you remove distractions (just for regular intervals) and we recommend you stay organized in your dedicated space.
