Population diversity, cultural diversity, evidence based practice and health care disparities

The discussion board topics assignment will explore how population and cultural diversity affects health care. Focusing on different aspects of pharmacotherapy, you will choose an article to share and compose a brief paragraph about why this article is related to your referenced topic and advanced nursing practice.

Choose an article that addresses any one of the following topics:

• Describes differences in effectiveness of pharmacologic therapies in different populations (women vs. men, African American populations versus Caucasian populations for example)
• Differences in how healthcare providers follow evidence based guidelines for pharmacotherapy?  Does adherence to guidelines vary by the population of the patient and/or the gender/ethnicity of the provider? What does the evidence tell us?
• Comparison of health outcomes and healthcare spending in the United States versus other countries (can be western or developing countries)
• Prices of prescription drugs in the U.S. compared to other countries and how does it impacts healthcare?
• Possible cultural/ethnic/socioeconomic barriers to medication adherence.

Instructions for choosing an article to share on Blackboard

1. Article can be from a scholarly journal or a reputable medical news source, such as Medscape.  Do not use articles in regular press geared to laypersons.  Sometimes you will see a piece about a published article in the lay press and it will reference the article or study where it obtained the information- go to the actual article!
2. The article must be related to one of the listed topics of discussion.
3. Post a link or pdf of the article or the abstract on your group’s discussion board- (not the main discussion board used for questions).
4. Post a brief paragraph about why this article is related to your referenced topic and advanced nursing practice. (Approx. 150-300 words)
5. You must post your article by the due date stated on the course schedule.
6. You must cite the article referenced in APA format at the bottom of the entry (after your article posting and brief discussion paragraph).

 Instructions replying to an article on Blackboard

1. You must reply to one article posted by a peer in your group.
2. You must post by the due date stated on the course schedule.
3. Your reply must be thoughtful, well presented, in complete sentences and applicable to the topic at hand (not just “I agree or disagree”).  Reply should be approximately 100-250 words.  Ideas include but are not limited to the following:

• An alternative opinion (please provide a reference for your opinion if needed).  For example, if you discuss something you read in another article that differs from the article on which you are commenting, cite the article for reference.
• You can discuss applicable clinical interactions (positive or negative) regarding the topic that you may have seen in practice (remember HIPPA- no patient identifiers).
• You may discuss how this article may apply to clinical practice of APNs.
• You may discuss what you learned from the article that may inform your future practice.
