Introduction

The chosen community for this capstone project is a disadvantaged school district where proper hand washing and wearing face masks are significant health issues.  Most of the people in this community have struggled with poor healthcare and education since they lacked the necessary economic endowment.  Population, in terms of demography, is heterogeneous, and large numbers of the student population include minority students from low-income families.  These students experience multiple forms of vulnerability regarding health and education; thus, misplaced interventions worsen the situation.  Education and the wellness of the entire community are prioritized, although everyday healthcare practices depend on every person’s cultural beliefs and health literacy.  Community perceptions present a readiness to enhance their health practices, though they also show some disbelief because of previous experiences with unresponsive programs.  From a personal perspective, there is much room for improved good health by promoting health education based on the cultural aspect to embrace the local community.

Nursing Diagnosis

Among the critical needs and concerns highlighted in this population group are poor compliance with hand hygiene protocol and student and staff use of face masks.  Existing survey results and teachers’ testimonies suggest low compliance with these measures and a heightened likelihood of getting sick or missing school.  The improvement needs were assessed based on the direct observational study in classrooms, interviews with the officials of school health departments, and health data of students’ absenteeism due to illness, which reflect poor hygienic behavior and increased levels of sick leave.  Furthermore, research suggests that measures such as hand washing and face mask covers play a crucial role in preventing the spread of infections in learning institutions with close physical contact (Lin et al., 2020).  Hence, it is necessary to fill this gap to help improve the overall health and levels of attendance of the student, thus increasing the efficiency of education delivery.

Supporting diagnosis cognizance should be paid to COVID-19 measures adopted that invite reflection about public health practices and their implementation in school contexts.  COVID-19 measures underscore the issue of proper hygiene measures within the facilities and distances that schools have to cover in providing these essential protocols.  Our study demonstrated that health education and other relevant information are crucial in enhancing positive health behaviors among students and staff (Lin et al. /2020/).  By focusing on this gap, the success of the project put into practice will be ensured, thus bringing about sustainable change within the school community in terms of health, which minimizes risks of illness.

Plan

Modifying the health-related school curriculum also makes up the plan to improve the creatures’ health of the marginalized school population; the plan will entail creating an educational video on hand washing and using masks.  The content will be supported by a set of active classrooms and illustrative materials that will make the content easy to understand and follow by a broad audience.  As mentioned, this plan is going to need a few significant resources to be put into action.  The required staff would include healthcare personnel to give the correct information to the patients and video specialists to develop quality clips.  Material items like video cameras, editing tools, and stuff for presentations will be required to create the video and other content that goes with it.

In order to deliver the content fluently without any limitations, an interesting multi-angle approach will be used.  First, staff would be encouraged to participate in the informational lunch and learn sessions where teachers and staff can learn for 20-30 minutes during lunch.  These sessions would be comprised of observing the proper approach to hand washing while wearing the masks and watching the video presentation.  This format enables one to directly engage the health professionals who are in a position to offer specific advice.  Moreover, some related practical sessions, like mask fitting, hand washing demonstrations, and rehearsals, would be a perfect match for enhancing the outcome of the video and making it as mnemonic as possible.

Besides the “Lunch and Learn,” an informative “Lunch and Look” series of colorful posters would be placed in the school’s strategic sections, including the corridors, eating areas, and staff rooms.  These posters would accompany the video by providing information about proper hand washing and the use of masks, illustrated graphics, and the main message from the video.  For example, using QR codes on the posters will draw viewers’ attention and take them to the video and other supporting information where necessary.  This two-pronged strategy makes it possible to remind the students and staff continuously through different forms of health messages on the same.

Self-Reflection

One of the significant responsibilities that CHN bears is that of an educator and liaison.  CHNs have the privilege of translating health knowledge into achieving the applicable skills by improving the knowledge and abilities of the population to make the right health decisions.  In this project, CHNs have the potential to promote proper health practices by improving student’s knowledge of hand hygiene and mask use within the school setting.  According to Akbar et al. (2022), Such educational function is precious for the population, especially for vulnerable groups who cannot afford healthcare services.

The health promotion offered by this project will go a long way in tackling the disease burden and enhancing health literacy levels among the people of this nation.  When done, the project will focus on eradicating current health issues and lay the foundation for more permanent changes within the school.  Ultimately, by providing teachers and students of the whole community with adequate knowledge and equipment concerning proper hand washing and face mask wearing during the project, the community’s health of the school shall be positively impacted.  According to Rchowski et al. (2020), this will assist in developing continuous health improvements and help establish a safer learning support mechanism.

Conclusion

This capstone project seeks to fill a gap in the areas of health in an underprivileged school district through posters on hand washing and mask-wearing.  In this project, an educational video presentation for teachers and students will enhance health practice and learning among the students and staff.  The plan is based on the ALMA Mater Christian University PHI 305 & 305N: Community Health Nursing course, which bases nursing care on health education and promotion.  Awareness, incorporating daily lunch and learn sessions and group poster presentations, enhances knowledge transfer and user compliance.  In this capacity, as educators, the CHNs can help the school community to be healthier, thus decreasing illnesses in society.  This project has highlighted the need to formulate health interventions considering the various cultural practices that embrace culturally diverse groups.
