The Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium in serene Centerport, NY, were the last to participate in the “Celestial Cartographies” exhibition, which bridges the breadth of the cosmos and the force of human observation. The exhibition, curated by the museum’s own Dr Holly Hodges, featured the works of contemporary artist Anya Sharma, whose multimedia installations and intricate astronomical sketches made up the heart of this immersive journey.
Immediately as one entered Vanderbilt’s large, high-ceilinged gallery, one was enveloped in the twilight atmosphere. The contrasting quality of the transition from brightness and sunlit grounds outside to the darkened dome of a planetarium found its equivalent in the deliberate exhibition design. Sharma’s installations, a mix of projected light and delicate wire sculptures and shimmering hand-drawn artists’ star charts, were scattered so as to lead visitors on a simulated cosmic voyager. The silence of the night sky was revealed as the scale of the projections changed the vastness of the subject, and the delicate hand-crafted nature of Sharma’s sketches called to mind a nearly reverent act of observing a personal act.
Rather than making a work of greater scientific accuracy, the work of this is less about science and more about wonder. Her projected installations consisted of gentle hypnotic rhythm-swirling nebulae of light and colour, which pulled the viewer into a contemplative state—between these, interspersed, her sketches in exquisite graphite and ink on torn parchment that was as old as the Celestial Sphere itself, each one being a painstaking record of a celestial phenomenon. These were not just technical drawings but were touched with a sense of poetry, of conveying the ephemeral beauty of the view of starlight and of the humans’ insatiable desire to draw the unknown.
From a gallery assistant, I talked about the fact that Sharma’s work was steeped in the history of exploration and discovery of the Vanderbilt. Her artistic vision was further catalyzed by the fact that the museum was a powerful backdrop, with its planetarium and array of natural history artifacts (“Planetarium Laser Shows Long Island | Things to Do Long Island”, 1). It also noted how the use of the gallery’s architecture was deliberate in order to elevate the immersive experience, the use of the high ceilings to create that sense of infinite space and the darkened walls to amplify the luminosity of Sharma’s projections.
The aim to foster a deeper connection between the viewer and the cosmos has been achieved by “Celestial Cartographies”. Instead, the exhibition was much more than a usual museum experience; it was a meditative walk through light, shadow, and the infinite space between. This exhibition was unique in the ways that shock and awe were created in unique artistic mediums and in the ways that they began to make people think of others in different ways. Nevertheless, despite the wealth of information present, some sections felt skimpy and may have been enhanced by more detailed text for those less knowledgeable in astronomy.
The most potent aspect of the exhibition was that it was able to map abstract ideas of astronomy into visceral emotions. It was a powerful and moving exploration of where we are in the universe that played off the partnership between the scientific and the artistic, the rational and the intuitive. It was a quiet atmosphere that was different from being amongst the often busy life around.
Overall, “Celestial Cartographies” at the Vanderbilt Museum is a must-see for anyone looking for a moment of reflection and a revitalized sense of wonder. The museum’s evocative space and Anya Sharma’s thought-provoking art brought us together. They stimulated our emotions and minds in an intellectually exciting way. I strongly encourage others to attend this exhibition and award it 4.5 out of 5 stars. The exhibition successfully brought the cosmos down to earth, making the vast and distant feel intimately close.
