Layers

Organize your drawing by assigning objects to layers.

With layers, you can:

Associate objects by their function or location

Display or hide all objects related to a single operation

Enforce linetype, color, and other property standards for each layer

Layer Controls

● LAYER command to open the Layer Properties Manager, enter LAYER or LA in the

Command window or you can click the Layer Properties tool on the ribbon.

● Green check next to the layer indicates that it is the current layer, new objects are

automatically placed on that layer.

● Light bulb icons are dark, indicating that these layers were turned off to hide the objects.

● Each layer name starts with a two-digit number, makes it easy to control the order of the

layers because their order does not depend on the alphabet.

Layer Settings

● Turn Off Layers – helps reduce visual complexity of drawing

● Freeze Layers – similar to turn off but improves performance in very large drawings.

● Lock Layers – prevents accidental changes to the objects in those layers. Objects in lock

layers are faded, reducing complexity in drawing.

● Set Default Properties – in setting this, new objects will use these properties unless your

override them.

Columns in Layer Setting

Status – green check indicate the current layer

Name – descriptive bubt not too long

On – turns the visibility of layer

Plot Style – used to define how objects are plotted

Plot – set the layer to either plot or not (on, off)

New VP Freeze – when on, freeze the selected layer in new viewports when created

Description – give descriptive to your layer system, important when working with other users.

Occasionally, check to make sure that the objects you create will be on the correct layer. Click

the drop-down arrow to display a list of layers, and then click a layer on the list to make it the

current layer.

Zoom/Pan

versatility to move around your drawing

Zoom Extents – display graphics contained in drawing

Zoom Window – prompts the user to pick two corners

Z Previous restores the displayed view prior to the current one

Z Realtime – provides interactive zooming capability. Pressing in ENTER automatically place

you in Realtime mode.

Z All – display the whole drawing as fas as its drawing limits

Z Dynamics – permits very quick movement around drawing.

Z Scale – hidden default option

Z Center – a point that is to be the center of the new display and a value to be its new height in

drawing units.

Z Object – asks you to select an object or objects, then press <ENTER> and the screen will

zoom to those objects only.

Z In – zoom in to the drawing by about 50%

Z Out – zoom out to the drawing by about 50%

Mouse Scroll- scrolling wheel on your mouse, you can use it to zoom in and out of your drawing.

Scroll towards you to zoom out and away from you to zoom in

Pan- allows you to quickly move around the drawing area at the same magnification you

currently have set

Orthographic Drawing Techniques in AutoCAD

It is used to describe the methods for drafting and designing machines, assemblies and in a

Object Snap (Osnap) Enter the OSNAP command to set the default object snaps, which are

also called “running” object snaps.

endpoint 2. When you move your cursor near location 3, the cursor locks into the horizontal and

Linear Dimensions

Dimension Styles

Dimension styles help establish and enforce drafting standards. There are many dimension

variables that can be set with the DIMSTYLE command to control virtually every nuance of the

appearance and behavior of dimensions. All these settings are stored in each dimension style.

The default dimension style is named either Standard (imperial) or ISO-25 (metric). It is

assigned to all dimensions until another style is set as the current dimension style.
