The ‘Customer’ represents the individual that buys the product. Simple attributes include:
Customer ID, phone, email. Composite attributes are: name (in this case the customer has name,
surname or middle names), address (city, street, zip code). The ‘Customer’ can also have derived
attributes such as age (can be derived from the date of birth).
The ‘Order’ represents an individual order placed by a customer. The simple attributes of an
order are order ID, customer ID, amount. A composite attribute can be the date (day, month,
year).
The ‘Inventory’ represents the inventory of the products. Simple attributes include: product ID,
stock available, stock sold.
A common attribute between these entities is that their attributes are stored in a database.
A relationship represents ‘an association among several entities’ (Vidhya, Jeyaram, & Ishwarya,
2016, pg. 44). There are four types of relationships: unary, binary, ternary, and quaternary.
In the case of an e-commerce company, the relationship between the entities is quaternary, where
each entity depends on one another. For instance, each order is associated with one customer,
each product can be associated with multiple orders, and each product is registered within the
inventory.
2. Translate the above four identified entities and attributes into tables with
appropriate primary and foreign keys.

– It involves identifying entities, attributes, and relationships based on business

connected, without worrying about how to make it all work in the computer.
– It focuses on understanding the business domain and modeling it in a way that is easily
understandable by stakeholders.

– It involves translating the conceptual design into actual database tables, indexes, and
other physical structures.
