Should such an athlete be allowed to participate based on self-identified gender preference? I believe they should, but not without a measure of fairness being considered in the process. The participation of transgender athletes in sports, especially women’s sports, leads to one question concerning equity in the game. However, these issues should not eclipse the need to be inclusive since this is essential in developing a better society that embraces social equity in sports. One such issue is fair competition among the participating entities. Transgender women retain certain primary sex characteristics like muscle mass and bone density that may further enhance them even after transitioning to the female sex. For instance, a trans woman who has been taking hormones might still have some male puberty traits, which makes it hard to leave everyone equal. These issues can be solved through amendments to competition rules, for example, the regulation of hormone levels or the creation of new gender categories.
However, policies implemented within the domain by sports organizations such as the IOC or NCAA are important in regulating these concerns, although they can only be adjusted as more findings emerge. In order to both permit trans women to participate as athletes and also to avoid the eradication of civil liberties that cis women have actively fought for, new policies must be developed concerning trans athletes. Conclusion
Transgender athletes’ participation in sports is a concern that should be addressed with regard to the welfare of the athletes and the fairness of competitions. Although I agree that Transgenders should be allowed to participate in sporting activities of their preferred gender, it is important to set up rules to provide a level playing ground for the athletes. Transgender involvement, especially in women’s sports, has implications that require proper regulation and constant study. With society constantly changing, change must also address the issue of trans in sports competitiveness while honoring trans rights as well. This constant discourse remains pertinent to the future of both sports and transgender persons’ rights.
